letter from: Pvt George Shonkwiler to: Mrs. Alice Shonkwiler Oct. 10, 1944 Tues. 8 P.M.
Are you using my new mailing address? It’s G.F.R.S. REPL PooL. A.P.O. 129 % Postmaster, New York, N.Y.
Dear Alice and Ronnie,
No mail again today so nothing much to write about again. If it weren’t for the fact I had a pretty easy day I probably wouldn’t be writing you tonite because it gets darn hard to keep on writing and saying the same thing over and over and not getting any answer. Of course I know that isn’t your fault so that’s why I’m sitting here now doing it again. You will get a big bang out of it when I get home and can tell you what I did today. Anyway, I think if I keep it up I will be good enough to get in the big league someday. As long as I have to stay here I’ll take
page 2 all of like we had today that they want to give me.
Walked down to the Red Cross tonite with Rosen. We tried to get some milk but I guess my source of supply there has finished. Anyhow, the last three trips there he has told us he has none for us. Too bad as I am really going to miss that milk. We played a few games of checkers and then I came home. Rosen stayed for the dance. He has some A.T.S. on the string he dances with every week. She’s married and so is he so I guess it’s all right, at least he says it is, I don’t know. Now that brings me up to date and you see; since writing you that eight page letter last night, I don’t have much to say tonite.
Since getting our overcoats it has warmed up. Maybe we won’t need the thing after all. Haven’t worn mine yet anyhow.
Did I tell you my trip to London
page 3 cost me two pounds and a half (ten dollars to you). Since I had a little luck in a game of poker last Friday night before going and won five dollars the trip didn’t cost me so much. And I still have a little over five pounds of good English money to my credit and the month is already one third over. Guess I’ll make out this month at that without having to skimp.
I am mailing the package in the morning. Certainly hope you get it O.K. and it doesn’t take too long. Not as long as it takes yours to reach me, anyhow.
Well my dears, that’s all for tonite. Maybe I’ll get some mail tomorrow or someday soon and I’ll have more to write about then. I never hear from anyone from home. Have they forgotten me. Have the wrong address or aren’t I just not receiving my mail? How’s my little Ronnie tonite?
All my love to you both and I miss you both very much, Daddy
