V-Mail from: Mrs. G. Shonkwiler to: Pvt George W. Shonkwiler April 2nd 1945 Monday 11:55 p.m. Noteworthy: Mom observes Dad’s good luck; Mom gives food advice.
Hello honey,
I received two V-Mails today written March 22nd and you really sound pretty disgusted with your present location. Don’t feel that way honey ’cause after all think how lucky you really are not being in combat and also think how lucky you were when wounded. Some of these boys are missing eyes, arms, or legs
and still have to make the best of it although their chances for a normal life again are completely gone. You and I can someday take up where we left off and be happier than ever before knowing how close we came to being separated forever. I should be telling you anything about being cheerful! I probably get the blues even oftener than you do but usually can forget them by thinking how lucky I really am and cheer myself up by thinking of a a rosy future that we will someday have if all goes well. I’m sorry to hear that your stomach is so bad lately. Perhaps your trouble is the same as mine and if you stop eating <? rangbage>, such as whole wheat cereals, fresh fruit, and raw vegetables you would feel better. I know I do. Also avoid anything laxative such as prunes and fresh fruit juice. See you next page.
Love, Mom and Ronnie
