V-mail from: Pvt George Shonkwiler to: Mrs. Alice Shonkwiler 5 April 45 - France Thur. 8 p.m. Noteworthy: softball is an important activity among soldiers.
Dearest Alice and Ronnie:
Another day and still nothing new and still here. Guess I told you last night how disgusted all this lying around doing nothing and waiting is so wqon’t go into that again. I’m in the company day room now waiting for dark and an outdoor movie. Have just come from watching a softball game. Softball seems to be the universal game over here. Everyone plays it and the games are so hotly contested as though there were thousands of dollars bet on each game. I’m still plenty stiff from playing Monday myself. Guess I forgot to tell you that our theater here is an outdoor job. Since we have double summertime it doesn’t get dark until about 9 p.m. It’s after 8 p.m. now and still very light out. I remember that summer when I first came over here[,] it was still light enough to read at 11 p.m. Some place isn’t it? Still hope to move tomorrow but don’t know. Have you received the sixty dollars I sent you yet? Feel fine considering everything. Met another boy from my outfit. Some of his news wasn’t too good.
Love, Daddy
