V-MAiL from: Private George Shonkwiler to: Mrs. Alice Shonkwiler, March 22, 1945, Thursday, 9 p.m. Page 2,
Hello again.
Something very nice happened to Sweeney here tonight. We got another bunch of new men <$ enr> from the States and as we were calling the roll, a fellow from came forward that lived two doors from him back in <? Berns> Indiana. He had just been on leave before coming down and had seen his wife and children. They are really having a <? rewards>. Now why couldn’t something like that happen to me? Maybe I’ll run into deal like that someday. Who knows?
Again, there is nothing new on my status and it’s beginning to look more and more like I’m going to be stuck here. There are worse places but <? sicol> <? priot> just sure where they are. One good thing has been the weather though. It’s really like summer here except for the mornings which still are rather chilly. Just built a fire a few moments ago. It’s been out all day. <? Guils> wish I could see both you and Ronnie right about now. Some times it seems as <? draness> say that I’ll get what you look like. Guess you haven’t changed much though.
Love you both daddy.
