to: Alice Shonkwiler
Friday evening
January 19, 1945.

Dear Alice,

First I want to thank you sincerely for remembering Kenny with the very clever
little Scotty.  He truly adores it.  He also received a stuffed horse (not
handmade), and has two teddy bears, and honestly you would think he was a
mother of all of them.  He seems to have a parental instinct already.

Of course we were very shocked and saddened to hear of Wesley’s injury.  And I
wanted to use my fists on someone for putting him back into combat so soon.  I
just hoped his trouble would be serious enough to release him.  Do you think I
was awful to wish that?

We are so fond of Wesley.  He’s certainly a "square shooter" if ever we knew
one.  And my heart goes out to you and Ronnie in your anxiety over him.  We’ll
just pray harder than ever for his safe return.

I wrote such a lengthy letter to Edith tonight, that I’m going to let her tell
you our family news.

On Dec. 29th I received a Xmas card with an enclosed note from Wesley, written
Dec. 1 and mailed Dec. 2.  He told us his Sergeant was a neighbor of ours in
Oakland City.  And on that same day, Wesley’s Sergeant had written home to
Oakland City about Wesley

being related to us, and the boy’s father brought the note to the office.  I
should enclose it if I can find it again.

I’m sorry I delayed so long in answering your Xmas message, and in thanking you
for the lovely gift to Kenny, but things have been happening thick and fast
here.  I have to assist Dr. Scholl, too, a part of the time, and I keep quite
busy.

Theodore is going to Chicago the 11th of Feb, but I’m not sure that I will be
able to accompany him.  He will probably call you, anyway
