Letter from: Alice Shonkwiler to: Pvt George W. Shonkwiler March 6, 1944 Mon. 10:45 P.M.
Dearest,
Just came back from the loop. I bought some material for slipcovers for the davenport. Cost me about $10.00. I’m going to make them myself, wish me luck.
This morning I got that affidavit from Rev. Dack and sent it in. I also went down to pay for the Tribune. Did you know we owed $8.70? I also got a 6 mo. subscription for you at $2.50. It’s servicemen’s special. If you get
page 2 transferred all you have to do is drop them a card and they’ll send it to your new address, even overseas. But you have to take it for 6 mo. and it does not include the Sunday issues. I can get it for you on Sundays too for $1.90 extra for 3 mo. or $3.80 extra for 6 mo. There is no servicemen’s price on Sunday issues. Let me know if you want it on Sundays too. Anyway I spent $11.64 for the Tribune today and $10 for material. Money is sure going fast, as I also spent $7 or $8 on your stuff the other day. I’m sending your clothes to the cleaners tomorrow and having
page 3 them sealed in moth-proof bags which will also cost several dollars. At this rate I’ll never get down to Florida to see you, as I should be saving some money for it. Haven’t paid electric bill yet and haven’t rec’d the gas or phone bills as yet either - oh me! How is your money holding out? Did you get paid yet?
Ronnie was out in the car with me twice today and does he love to ride! Weather was terrible tho, as it was snowing all week-end and on top of snow and ice, it rained today. Was
page 4 pretty slippery driving, but I made it O.K. I went down with Rena to get my driver’s license, but he was too busy with income tax customers. Told me to come back the 16th and he’d get it for me.
Ronnie is such a good boy. Elinor just marveles at how sweet he is. I’m getting jealous, they play and dance and have so much fun. But when it comes to Mommy going away without him he won’t let me go without a fuss, so guess he still loves me. Elinor did dishes and put him to bed tonite, while I went downtown, so she’s sort of nice to have around.
Page 5 Things are running a lot smoother than I had even dared hope, as far as all of us getting along etc. If I only had my "daddy" here when I get blue and loansome, everything would be O.K. Even sitting reading on the davenport doesn’t seem like it should, as you’re not here for me to "cuddle up" to.
The wind is blowing outside and the temperature is going down to 10 or 12 degrees by midnite they say. Aren’t you glad you’re in a warm climate?
Speaking of damp clothes in the morning, that’s just the
page 6 way it was in California when I was there, My bones always felt achy when I got out of bed in the morning from the dampness. Are you having any rain? Or is this the rainy season in Florida? It is in Calif. about this time of year.
Murray said he wrote you a letter last nite. You should feel flattered, because I guess he hasn’t written anything but post-cards to anyone in years.
Well, honey, outside of the fact that both Ronnie and I wish we were with you every minute, I haven’t much more to say, so, bye, now and don’t drink too much of that "coffee."
Bye, Love always and forever, Mom and Ronnie.
