Letter from: Sergeant Arthur Lane to: Pvt George W. Shonkwiler Feb. 22nd, 1945 Belgium Noteworthy: Dad’s Sergeant says no one besides Dad was hurt in the attack.
Dear George,
It was great hearing from you. I hope you have gotten a[s] good a deal as your address would indicate.
I can’t tell you much about what happened - you were right about the others - No one was hurt seriously. It was a German shell through the window. I was the only one in the next room. Got plenty well shaken and then beat it across the alley for medics. It was just a hell of a break.
Thank the Lord you’ll have no after effects from your wounds - I guess in the long run, you got the best break by far.
Boy we really miss those chicken feeds - I’ll never forget that particular meal the rest of my life -- That was about the most memorable day in my short career. So long for now. Write again if you can. Good luck now,
Art Lane
