Letter from: Mrs. Alice Shonkwiler to: Pvt George W. Shonkwiler April 15, 1944 Sat. 3:00 P.M.
Hello, honey,
Here I am sitting in the Gary South Shore Station patiently waiting since 2:20 for Gladys and Dick to show up. [I] cheated Ronnie out of a nap and everything to get here on time and they were going to meet me at 2:30. I’m getting sort of disgusted. I’m having an awful time with Ronnie, as he’s tired and is getting crabby and wants to run all over the station. -- I’m getting mad!
Well, it won’t be long now
page 2 before you’ll be seeing us. Only seven more days. -- Oh sure! We can hardly wait! How about you?
I’m beginning to wonder whether they’re waiting at the South Shore bus terminal. I took it for granted they meant the train. I didn’t know there was a South Shore bus terminal until I got here. I’ll sit here just another half hour and then try to call them or something. I should have known better than to think the Hackers would get my place on time I guess! I’ve waited 50 minutes already.
page 3 It’s such a miserable day. Been raining all day and all last nite. Fact is, it seems it rains all the time lately. Sure hope it’s nice when I get to Florida. If it rains the day I get there, I’ll turn around and come back to Chicago.
Dick is here now and it’s 3:20. Boy, did I tell him.
Well, bye, Darling. See you soon, Love, Mom and Ronnie.
P.S. Dick says hello! (see other side - please.)
page 4 Hi Wes.
I’ve just been entertaining Ronnie with a pinball machine. He’s going to be a baseball player when he grows up. Alice has been waiting for me since 2:30. It’s now 3:15 P.M. I’m always on time.
Excuse the writing as I’m trying to write on my knee. How’s the Army? I’ll know myself pretty soon. I’m supposed to go in the last week in April. Everyone here is just fine. Hoping you are the same.
Dick .. . .. .
