Letter from: Alice Shonkwiler to: Pvt George Shonkwiler April 6th, 1944
Darling,
I arrived in Rockford this afternoon at 2:30 P.M. All in one piece, too. Ronnie went to sleep on the way for about an hour. We went the way you told us and stopped in St. Charles for lunch. We had fruit salad, soup, milk, toast and coffee. Ronnie was such a good boy all the way. We left Chicago about 11:30 and stopped about 45 minutes in St. Charles. There was very little traffic, so I didn’t have much trouble. Didn’t even get lost. Isn’t that wonderful?
Went out to see Eleanor Johnson, but she wasn’t home. I’d drive along and see someone I knew and stop and chat. Sure was fun to see old friends.
I want to mail this right away before the post office closes, so I can’t make it very long.
Oralee isn’t coming to Rockford
page 2 as Fred doesn’t get off this week-end. So I’m staying here till Monday morning, so I can avoid holiday traffic. I think that’s best. I also am going to see Elsie Redditis on Sunday. She’s coming to Rockford to see me.
I’ll write more tonight or in the morning, as I just wanted you to know I got here safely.
Bye, honey -- and I love you so much and so does Ronnie. I’m certainly envious of all these gals here in Rockford who still have their husbands at home.
Bye, Love, Mom and Ronnie.
