26 Mar March 26, 1945

March 26, 1945, Sunday 8 p.m.
 Dearest Wes,

It seems ages since I’ve written my honey. I missed writing last night
because I didn’t get home from Holmes’ until 1 a.m. and as I planned on
getting up at 7.30 this morning, I went right to bed. Will you forgive me?
I knew you would!

I cleaned house practically all day yesterday and when I was through,
Ronnie and I went up on the avenue to buy some groceries. And I also
bought a slip for myself. Imagine, I spent $2.50 for it and I really
couldn’t afford it, but can’t go without "undies" either. Seems my
pre-marriage things are all wearing out at once. I’ll be glad when
summer comes so my stocking worries will be over and I can get a suntan
and go bare-legged again.

Marge asked me to come over last night, so Ronnie and I went over about
7.30. She asked me to stop for a quart of ice cream as she had some
strawberries. When I got there, she asked Murray to pay me for it, but
he said no and said he figured I owed them some ice cream anyway. I
realized that he’s brought ice cream over a couple of times in the past
and that he’s taken me to shows a couple of times, but still thought it
rather cheap of him to say so. Besides, they’ve had lots of evening
snacks here too. Ah, well, guess a poor illiterate Swede like me
shouldn’t question a "scholar" like Murray even if his actions seem
impolite to me. Maybe we just rub one another the wrong way. Could be!
I still think Marge is tops, however, so guess, so guess I’ll just have
to grin and bear him. His constant nagging of any and all her efforts
is what really gets me down, but then if she can take it, I guess it’s
her problem. If and when I’m ever criticized in front of other people
like she is by my husband, I will just politely give up and leave, and
that’s for sure.

(8:45) Marge just stopped in for a minute. Murray wouldn’t come in as
he wants to get home and "to bed". She stopped for some thread that I
had forgotten to give her last night.

Know what I did this A.M.? I got up at 7.30 and by 9:00, Ronnie and I
were dressed and had our breakfast. At 9.15, I brought him down to
113th and Union to the Luther Church there and he had his first day of
Sunday school. He was up and down like a jack-in-the-box all the time,
but seemed to enjoy himself. After the Sunday school teacher persuaded
him to drop his money in the collection plate, he kept watch until they
were through passing it and had set the collection on a table up near the
front, then he rushed up and took a nickel out. Was I embarrassed.
Imagine our son robbing the collection plate his first day in Sunday school.
He’s became accustomed to getting pennies and nickels from me for his
"piggy bank" and I suppose he decided he needed to get more money "outside".
I stayed with him through Sunday school today, but hereafter I will take
him down and pick him up. I do hope he’ll behave himself when I’m not
around. Several children on Lowe Avenue go there too, Jennifer Nirke and
Anna Marie Montine and I think Bobby may start too altho when I talked

to Mrs. Dixon today, she said she thought Bobby too young (he’s four).
The trouble is she doesn’t want to get up to dress him every Sunday that
early, as she sleeps till close to noon every day. It’s no wonder she
weighs 180 pounds and I 104. I wonder if I’ll gain 76 pounds in the
next eight years. Do you think so?

The Hayes stopped in this afternoon and they had asked me again last
Thursday to go to Sunday school and church with them this Sunday.
I didn’t know how to tell them about starting Ronnie over here at the
Lutheran Church. But I finally did and I guess they were pretty surprised.

They didn’t say much, however, except that Tom Cauble and family are
Lutherans etc. At least I got out of going to church with them from now
on, and that’s something as I’d rather be on my own. I’d like to have
Ronnie baptized too, or would you rather I should wait until you get home,
anything you say, or should we wait until we christened Jr?

Ronnie’s been sitting here this evening playing with a miniature bowling
set he got at Christmas time. It consists of eight clowns, and when you
roll the ball and hit them, they turn somersaults and their hats fall off.
He’s had a lot of fun with it.

Today at Sunday school, when the class teacher said the Lord’s Prayer,
Ronnie folded his hands too and recited all of his, "Now I lay me down
to sleep", from beginning to end. It was so funny! He sure is some guy,
and the teacher is going to have her hands full every Sunday.

There are three boys and about ten girls in his class. Not bad, huh?
I had a letter from Eleanor, which I’m enclosing.

Good night, honey, and may you be kept safe from all harm.
Love Mom and Ronnie.

P.S. We had broiled porterhuse steak today, and creamed asparagus,
buttered green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy cake and banana pineapple
jello, and coffee. Not bad. And I wish you could have been with us.
Meat is scarce these days.
