Camp Blanding, Florida. 6/20/44 Tues 8 P.M.
Dear Alice and Ronnie,
Another day gone and that means another day nearer to going home. Its been very hot here again today. We had a soft day. 8 hrs of review classwork during which time we mostly slept or told jokes or just did nothing. Tomorrow isn’t going to be quite so easy — physical fitness day. We start off at 5:30 A.M. with our last 4 mile speed march. It carries us on in some manner or form until a compass course at 10 P.M. that nite. So tomorrow will be our last <? ressien..er> in this camp that you really have to work in the army. Just came back from Px where we witnessed a soldier collapsing from heat or something. I guess they will see plenty of that here from now on.
Our CO told us today that we probably will know Sat. what and where and when. It looks like though,by this time next week, we will be on our way. Sorry I can’t tell Eleanor any more definite than that but tell her not
to worry because if she is still there I am capable of handling two women. Especially two who seem to be as weak as you two have sounded like you are lately.
Glad you and Analee were able to get together – having dinner out once in a while always helps the morale. Must of certainly helped yours because there is considerable difference in the last two letters I received from you.
As for Fred staying in the army after the war — all I have to say he is nuts and without very much ambition.
I received the $50 — thanks — will try take good care of it. Sounds like you are doing pretty well along the financial line. Just keep up the good work. Only don’t carry it so far that it hurts. You know there are things more important than money.
Thursday morning we are having a company farewell beer party here in company area. Beer and sandwiches. Still no women. I understand there is a regimental dance at recreational hall tonite — with women — we are allowed to go to but for some reason don’t feel very interested. Some of the boys have gone though and here I lie writing letters. Oh yes I am lying out back of hut in a blanket trying to write and rest a little both at the same time. From the looks of my face I appears like I must have lost a little more weight during the past two weeks. Maybe I need a little more rest for my coming party or parties at home with my wife too.
Well my dear, I have been postponing for so long writing to all those people who sent me packages that I am ashamed of myself. So think i’ll cut you a little short tonite and see if I can’t get off a card or two anyway. Maybe I am skiiing by with that. You know I am getting woefully <? down > lazy when it comes to doing things I am not made to do. So don’t expect too much extra out of me when I get home. <? Aase> all I’m going to do is lay around and sleep and rest and rest and sleep.
Bye now and give Ronnie a big kiss for me and save all the rest up for me because you are going to get plenty of opportunity to really put out yes all nite long — day too — if possible. You know two months is a hell of a long time and we are going to have to cram a lot of loving and everything else into those short ten days to last for a much longer time I’m afraid.
With all my love to you both Daddy
