Letter from: Alice Shonkwiler to: Pvt George W. Shonkwiler March 24th, 1944, Friday, 5:00 p.m.
Darling,
I am writing a few lines before I go to the post office to get some stamps. I also have dinner to prepare yet. Eleanor is trying to go to sleep in the big chair and Judy is asleep and snoring beside me and Ronnie is still asleep. What a family! I’m not sleepy, but have a sore throat and a cold. The weather is beautiful outdoors and it’s about 60 degrees and lots of sunshine. I haven’t had a chance to enjoy it tho, as I’ve been washing clothes and cleaning house all day. Ronnie is still coughing a little at night, so I don’t want him to go out until he’s completely over it. He’s eating real good and outside of coughing a little, he looks and acts as spry as ever. It’s this uncertain weather and I guess the sewer water in the basement hasn’t helped any either, but it’s O.K. now since it was fixed.
Page 2. I’m sending you some snapshots, which I hope will make up for this short letter. The dim ones were taken on a very dark and dreary day. I had the shutter opening as open as it will go and yet they’re dim. The one of me Eleanor took after she had fixed my hair in an upswept hairdo, as she wanted you to see it. I think I look kind of funny, but I think the ones of Ronnie are darling, don’t you? I had some more of me, but know you’d rather have Ronnie’s pictures than mine anyway.
When are you going to have a picture taken of yourself? Ronnie and I can’t wait to see it. If nothing else get a 3 for a dime picture just so we can get a glimpse of how you look.
Well darling must say bye now so I can mail this.
By the way, did you have the car inspected? I notice Mar. 31st is the last day. If not, where do I go?
Bye and heaps of love, Ronnie and Mommy
