V-mail from: Pvt George Shonkwiler to: Mrs. Alice Shonkwiler 10th April 1945, France, Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.
Dearest Alice and Ronnie,
Well into another week and still no news or no change in status. Guess I’m destined to float around in replacement depots forever. As in the last place, I am gradually getting used to this place and once accostumed to a place, one can always find a few good things about it to offset some of its bad ones. Things are not too bad here. The <? mess> hall <? desnind> detail I’m in with three other fellows I’ve been with since coming from England is proving to provide just enough work to make the time go by. We usually <? kick> off early enough at chow and in the afternoons to enjoy a little of the place. We have pretty good washing facilities here and the day room ping pong table and shows at night all help toward making things as agreeable as possible. I saw "Back Home in Indiana" last night. Remember we saw it together somewhere sometime a long time ago. At least it seems like one hell of a long time ago. Still haven’t received any mail since coming here except the package from Claude. I stopped trying to figure out this mailing system a long time ago and take my mail if and when I get it. May see you later, right now there is a G.I. show tonight so will see.
Love to you both, Daddy
