letter from: PFC George Shonkwiler to: Alice Shonkwiler Nice, France 23 August, 45
Happy Anniversary, my dear,
This perfume I bought at Grasses about 20 miles from Nice. It’s supposedly the center of the perfume world. The box of No. 5 is the same as Chanel No. 5. According to the guide in the factory, they make the essence of all the perfumes here. It is then sent to other firms for their trade names. They claimed to the prices here were cost. However, I still paid three hundred and fifty francs for each box.
The ivory elephant I picked up in a shop near here and is made from pure ivory tusks from Africa.
Guess you should have enough perfume now to make you smell like the French mademoiselles for years. Just don’t put as much on as they do at a time.
Wes
