letter from: PFC George W. Shonkwiler to: Mrs. Alice Shonkwiler Compiegne, France 31 July 45, 10:30 P.M.
Dearest Alice and Ronnie,
Just to let you know, while I am waiting for the water to heat to shave with[,] that I’m still thinking of you once in a while. No mail today and nothing new of any consequence. Saw a pretty good show tonight - Barbara Stanwyck in "My Reputation." I was somewhat in the same situation as she was which you will see should you see the picture. A little surprising too how my situation seemed to pretty well work out as she worked out hers. Storybook endings you might say <? wells> hers didn’t end, that is in the picture, and ours seemed to be held up a little bit, too. But there will come a day I feel sure.
On my way back from the show I stopped in at the hospital to see my friend from Chicago but he was out on pass, showed the
page 2 ward boy my new skin trouble and he prophesied that I would be back soon. But I think he is in for a surprise as I have no intentions of going back unless it is absolutely necessary. Right now I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
It’s been very nice here today not too hot and tonite cool enough for blankets. In fact there has [have] been no nites here yet that we haven’t had to have at least one blanket over us. Even in summertime in France one needs someone to help keep him warm.
I learned today that there are only five ahead of me on the list for furloughs to Southern France. Looks like I may be going down there before too long. That shouldn’t be too bad.
Well my dears will try to do better tomorrow nite. Right now I am ready for a quiet shave and off to bed.
All my love to you both, Daddy
