letter from: George W. Shonkwiler to: Mrs. Alice Shonkwiler 68th Station Hospital, Compiegne, France 5 July, 45
These are the two little items I sort of designated and put together all by my own little self just to prove to you and Ronnie that I haven’t been spending all my time here in the hospital playing around.
The little coin wristband I thought Ronnie could use to carry his Sunday School money in without worrying about losing it all the time. The bag, purse, or whatever you wish to call that other thing maybe you can use for something. Neither one is much but then they really don’t have much to work with here.
The letters are all those I have received from you since coming to the hospital.
page 2 Since I plan on sending all those I have home, thought I might as well start with these. Don’t be getting any ideas with them now.
The shoes are some I was able to get here in the hospital PX. The champagne cork was one I saved out of some champagne we had a few days before I came in here.
I have a few little other odds and ends back in my barracks bag I had planned on sending but that will come later now, I guess.
Nothing new today. The doctor hasn’t even been in. The penicillin salve they are now giving me seems the best yet. My face was covered two days ago. Today it is almost clear.
Love, Daddy
