Letter from: A. Shonkwiler to: Pvt. George W. Shonkwiler June 13th, 1945, Wednesday, 11 o’clock p.m.
Hello Honey,
This will be very short as I’m due in bed now. You see, I’m going to Billings in the morning at 8 o’clock, so I’ll have to get up at 6 o’clock to make it. Besides, this headache is no inspiration for a love letter. I just wrote to Claude accepting their offer of going to a lake cottage with them.
Mrs. Page, Ronnie and I walked up to Michigan Avenue today where I paid the telephone bill and bought a couple overseas cartons. (I fell asleep just now,
page two imagine.) I’ve been using the pressure cooker lately for a few things. Today I made a big kettle of vegetable soup. I got a big soup bone from Benny for 20 cents, and as I had about a half pound of beef on hand, I cubed it and put it in along with carrots, celery, parsley, potatoes, onions, bay leaf. It was delicious, and I have enough for several days. Do you like homemade vegetable soup? I hope so, so I can make it when you come home, too. Ronnie likes it and ate a big bowl of it, plus
page three bread and butter, peaches and milk for supper. At noon, we had leftover chicken, potatoes, gravy, asparagus, and ice cream.
I’m enclosing a couple of snaps taken on Dixon’s camera last Christmas. She just had the role developed now, and gave me these two tonight. Mr. Han (next door to Dixon’s) gave me a bunch of the dahlia bulbs tonight, and some chrysanthemum plants. Nice, don’t you think?
Mrs. Dixon gave me a bouquet of carnations from her garden today and
page four I picked several peonies from our own bushes, so I have a big bouquet of flowers on the radio (carnations). A bouquet of pink and white peonies on the dining room table, one peony in a bud vase in the kitchen, and a bouquet of peonies on either side of the mantel. Very pretty, I’d say.
I sewed on a jacket for Ronnie this afternoon, but gave up as my head was splitting. It’s been about 85 degrees today for the first day in months. Bye now,
love you, Mom and Ronnie.
