Letter from: A. Shonkwiler to: PFC George W. Shonkwiler June 25th, 1945, Monday, 11:50 p.m.
My Darling, I’m writing this in bed with a glass of Ovaltine beside me for a nightcap. Ronny’s sound asleep and looks so sweet in his crib, just like a little angel. Which reminds me, while on the elevator Sat. in the Triangle Restaurant, the operator (a girl) just couldn’t get over what a cute little boy I had. He just slays ’em old or young. Guess I don’t have to tell you, do I?
I’ve had a very uneventful day today and not even one letter. Boo-hoo! Perhaps tomorrow I’ll be luckier. I got a letter from you Sat. which you had marked airmail but had forgotten to put a stamp on it, so it came regular mail. It was dated May 23rd, so it was pretty old news, as I’d already had a June 13th letter, the day before. A letter’s a letter, tho, and still very much appreciated, but don’t forget the
page 2 airmail, next time.
Don’t feel very good today, but nothing serious. Did very little today, altho I did alter a shorts outfit that Gladys bought for herself Sat. I told her at the time it would be too small, but she listened to the clerk instead, so as a result I spent almost all day altering it in a 1/2 day [dozen] places so she can wear it next weekend. She just can’t seem to realize she has large hips I guess. She weighs 16 pounds more than I and is an inch shorter, so figure it out.
Ronnie said at the dinner table tonight that he wants a baby sister. Imagine? He said, "go buy one at the store, Mommy, the baby store". I asked him who told him you could get them there and he grinned and pointed at himself. In other words, it was his own idea.
Well honey, do you think I
page 3 get him that instead of a playground set? Well, it’s an idea. After all, you want him to have the things he wants most, don’t you? He wanted to take Hohn’s little granddaughter (two years old) home with us tonight when I went over to get him for bed.
I wrote Claude tonight and that was the extent of my evening except for a phone call from Marge saying she’s on her vacation and that she’d be over at 9:00 in the morning for a sun bath in the backyard.
Did I tell you that Dick has sent both Gladys and Joyce watches from Germany? Gladys’ is worth $125. He also sent two home for himself. One a Longines and the other a Given Vertihin. He’s also sending two expensive cameras home. He works in the PX or warehouse which
page 4 handles watches, cameras, equipment, and so on. He also sent her a carton of film (16 rolls, I think). He says he "charges it off" as damaged goods and in other words, is stealing the stuff or what? Sounds funny to me! He’s also sending home a shotgun. Don’t mention this to Dick or Gladys as I may be all wet and don’t want to be in the middle again. I’m only guessing!
Why don’t you ask him if he can sell you some film as it seems he’s able to get it?
Well, good night darling and get well soon or at least well enough to come
home and I’ll try to cure you of all your ailments if I can.
Bye and lots and lots of love. Mom and Ronnie
P.S. Dick’s brother, Art, was home on furlough from the Pacific and got married while at home. Dick’s brother, Les, is now a Staff Sgt. Can’t figure out his staying here and it’s not cause he’s physically unfit.
