v-mail from: Pvt George Shonkwiler to: Mrs. Alice Shonkwiler France 10 May 1945 Thurs. 10 P.M.
Dear Alice and Ronnie:
Just back from seeing Errol Flynn in something about Burma ["Objectve Burma!]. Can’t remember the exact name. Anyway, it was pretty good. Of course fighting, at least over here? isn’t exactly like that but it does look good in the movies and men get killed in both and that’s the same.
The point system for going home was announced tonite but as yet none of us actually know how it is going to work. Guess we will hear all about it tomorrow. I’m either going to be pretty happy or pretty sad this time tomorrow. Either way I know there will still be a long wait before I finally get on that boat for home.
<? It’s> been very nice here again today and now I think that summer has arrived for sure. And it is very nice. Reminds me any week of June weather back home. Wish I were there to enjoy a little of it. Looks very much like you are going to have to spend another summer without me being there again. Hope I get some mail some of these days.
Love to you both, Daddy
