letter rom: PFC George W Shonkwiler to: Mrs. Alice Shonkwiler Compiegne, France 18 Sept. 45 9 P.M.
Dear Alice and Ronnie,
Well I’ve been to the big city today and back and have now just come back from a show downtown[,] "Duffy’s Tavern." Really pretty good show.
Guess you must know by this time that I went to Paris to send you and Mr Chamberlin the telegram that I hope you have received by this time. We can’t send telegrams saying anything we want from Compiegne. The coda air corps base here runs a bus into Paris every morning and comes back that nite at eleven. It was raining in Paris and I really had very little else to do so came back on our regular trucks. They leave at 3 P.m. So you see I made a quick trip of it all.
Certainly hope those telegrams do some good and they arrived there in time. They cost me a total of twenty three dollars. That’s one way of spending my money.
Received two letters today one from "you-know-who" and one from Murray. Sounds like you and Elsie had a pretty fair time although how anyone can get a kick
page 2 out of shopping for five hours is beyond me. Oh yes yesterday I got your big card with the picture of Michigan Ave. I have it tacked up over my desk. My fellow Chicagolin in the office and I google over it practically all the time. Well it’s nice to dream about anyhow.
Murray didn’t have much to say. Panned Jim T. a little and said he thought he was going back to his old job with Associates. Guess he is not going to try to get him[self] in at Smith’s. Mentioned in a round about way us going in business together. Said also that he had sold an $8,000 bungalow but was having pricing difficulties and thought he was going to lose it. Thought he would be able to sell five or six houses this winter. If he does he has turned over a new leaf.
It seems everyone back there already have their big problems which make my little problems of getting out of the damn Army very magnificent indeed. Boy it must be rough to be a civilian. Well my dears this is kinda short tonite because I still have to write Mr. Chamberlain and tell him what the telegram is about just in case you haven’t. So now all my love to you both and keep your fingers crossed.
